A crystal box with ashes inside
A beautiful surface with secrets to hide

Experience and memories stored away
Packed into hiding where they will stay

Loves that are lost, fires that have died
Piled with the rest and shoved aside

Smoldering embers that flicker with rage
The crystal box is now your cage.

  1. I like it, one more loss, “piled with the rest and shoved aside” in a beautiful box full of rage. Was this really written at 4 AM? My muses like to wake me up at odd hours, too. 🙂

  2. It’s been over 30 years. I remember vaguely that I came up with the first stanza and it bounced around in my brain for a few days before I wrote the rest of it. Looking at it now, I think it needs a little editing:

A crystal box with ashes inside
A polished surface with secrets to hide

    Experience and memory stored away
Packed into hiding where they will stay

Loves that are lost, fires that have died
Piled with the rest and shoved aside

    Smoldering embers flickering with rage
The crystal box is now a cage.
