Revised, with a new title, 7/23/18
There was a terrible accident last night
A few blocks up the memorial parkway
When the drunk driver ran the light
The morning news had the story right
After midnight, the first Sunday in May
There was a terrible accident last night
The reporter described a horrific sight
About how life can be ended in such a way
When the drunk driver ran the light
He’d been out for a cocktail and a bite
Charges will be filed the following day
There was a terrible accident last night
They were being careful, driving on the right
A family of four, coming home from a play
When the drunk driver ran the light
They swerved to avoid his headlights, bright
They died; unharmed, the drunkard walked away
There was a terrible accident last night
When the drunk driver ran the light
Another villanelle for your enjoyment, though this one is a bit morbid.
Well done, Scott. This accident, the timing and the way it happened, was just begging to be a villanelle. Seems like the drunk drivers never get hurt, while taking others’ lives or leaving them in a shambles. 😦
