Roman candles
Fiery light
Flame brightly
In showers of red.

Flaming sparkles
Brilliant red
Burning great holes
Like fountains spilling down.

Fountains of blood
Inside my eyes.

In the early 1970s, Brenda lost the use of her left eye (except light perception) due to Histoplasmosis. In 1984, less than a month after we started living together, her right eye began hemorrhaging, reducing it to about 30%, peripheral vision only, caused by both the histoplasmosis and diabetic retinopathy. This poem, Roman Candles, described what retinal hemorrhaging looked like from her perspective.
